Early Years

Beyond the Mill Walls is the perfect place to explore on a visit to Cromford Mills.

The Beyond the Mill Walls area is open to the public, and free of charge to visit. Please get in touch with us if you would like to reserve the Storytelling Glade for lunch or borrow our bug hunting gear.

Please note, there is open access to running water both from the meadow and in the Mill Yard. Please carry out your own risk assessment before planning your visit.

Our mini mill challenges are dotted throughout the Mill Yard, engaging children and adults alike (although small children might need a bit of help to reach the handles).

We can adapt our KS1 Arts Day activities for toddlers, or deliver an onsite Scavenger Tots session (please see Outreach for details and prices).

Unable to get to us? We will come to you! We are happy to take our ‘Scavenger Tots’ sessions all over Derbyshire.

Choose from the following sessions:

Timing: 45 minute sessions

Age: suitable for 2-6 year olds

Group size: suitable for groups of 6 to 25

Structure: Fully led. We start with circle time, with songs and play, then break for a craft in the middle, before returning to the circle for a final song or story.

£3 per child, minimum booking of 6 children applies. For Early Years settings more than 10 miles from Cromford Mills, an extra £10 will be charged to cover staff time and petrol costs.
