Protect the past. Be part of the future. Become a member.

As an independent charity we rely on our visitor income to enable us to fulfil our charitable aims and keep Cromford Mills standing.  At this difficult time, our membership scheme is one way that you can still support our work.  Visit our donate page to see the other ways that you can help protect Cromford Mills, both now and for the future. Saving Cromford Mills

In the 1970s volunteers came together to save Cromford Mills from being demolished.  As the world’s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mill built by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1771, Cromford Mills has a hugely important place in history and is a stunning built example of innovation at the start of the industrial revolution.  Now an independent charity, the Arkwright Society has worked tirelessly to rescue the site and restore it to the world heritage attraction you see today.  There is a long way to go to finish the full restoration and every pound of your membership helps us to continue this work and protect everything that we have already achieved.

Protecting the Future

We want Cromford Mills to be as dynamic, innovative and enterprising today as it was in the 18th Century by creating sustainable new uses for the site that contribute positively to the local community, economy and environment.  Your membership helps us to continue our education, events and volunteering programmes, inspiring people about our amazing past and protecting it for future generations.

Caring for the Natural Environment

Membership subscriptions are not only vital in supporting the regeneration of Cromford Mills, but they also help us to take care of the surrounding natural environment with people, wildlife, and history in mind. The Arkwright Society owns and manages area surrounding the mill between St Mary’s Church and the river.  Our recent project, ‘Beyond the Mill Walls’ has helped us to improve the management of this area for wildlife, as well as installing woodland sculptures, picnic benches and new interpretation.  The Arkwright Society also owns the beautiful Lumsdale Valley, a Scheduled Ancient Monument consisting of waterfalls and old mill ruins, as well as Slinter Woods and Dunsley Meadows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and local nature reserve.  All of these beautiful environments require a lot of care and attention and your membership fees help fund this vital work, making the locality a better place for everyone.

The Benefits of Membership

As a member you can enjoy exclusive benefits in return for your support of our charity’s work.  Benefits include: free car parking at Cromford Mills, free admission tickets to the Visitor Centre and guided tours, exclusive member events and priority booking, discounts in the shop, cafes and on certain events and entry into our annual prize draw.
