Get Involved at Cromford Mills

Volunteer at Cromford Mills

Would you like to be part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site?  Try something different, meet new people and learn new skills by joining our volunteer team.  The Arkwright Society at Cromford Mills and Lumsdale has exciting volunteer opportunities for those seeking to get involved.

Volunteering at Cromford

The Arkwright Society could not have achieved its success so far without all of the volunteers who have offered their time and tackled a wide variety of work, ranging from tour guiding to environmental monitoring.  We need lots of people to help in a variety of areas alongside our current volunteer teams.

New Volunteer Opportunities in the Gateway to the World Heritage Site

Cromford Mills is looking for enthusiastic individuals to help visitors in the recently opened Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site Gateway.  The new Gateway includes an auditorium and exhibition area all about the heritage of this remarkable valley. There is also a shop and an amazing audio visual presentation inside Arkwright’s first mill, led by the man himself.

We are looking for people to become Gateway Hosts and welcome visitors to this fantastic new centre; you will be inspiring people to visit, learn and engage in the history of this incredible industrial valley.  All volunteers will be given full training so you can share your enthusiasm and knowledge and perform a range of tasks.

Volunteer Opportunities

Whatever your background or interests there is likely to be an opportunity for you, whether you want to help with a short term project or make a longer term commitment. The majority of volunteers work part time and some of the activities can be done at home. There are a variety of areas across Cromford Mills and Lumsdale where we need more people to get involved to help us with all kinds of activities. We are currently recruiting for the following roles:

  • Gateway Volunteers
  • Retail Volunteers
  • Tour Guides
  • Costumed Interpreters
  • Education Volunteers
  • Event Volunteers
  • Membership Recruiters
  • Site Steward Volunteers at Cromford Mills and Lumsdale
  • Administration in a variety of departments

If you feel your skills could be used for something that hasn’t been mentioned here please contact the Volunteer Manager to discuss it further.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering for the Arkwright Society offers a brilliant chance to join in with local culture, gain an insight into history in a wonderful setting, and make new friends. You can learn new skills or develop those you already have and expand your C.V.  Volunteering can be hugely rewarding as you support the charity in making Cromford Mills a fantastic place to visit and help to preserve it for future generations.
