In line with the national lockdown, Cromford Mills will remain closed to the public. The Counting House Coffee Stop will now also remain closed until the situation improves. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Coronavirus update: 23rd March 2020

We have decided to close Cromford Mills to the public from 12pm on Monday 23 March until further notice, this now includes our cafés and shops.

We have been following government advice and changing our business practices daily to try and do what is best for our staff, volunteers and visitors. The large number of people who have headed to the countryside this weekend is putting more people at risk and we do not want to encourage more people to venture to the locality. We want to thank our amazing staff team who have adapted so quickly to the evolving situation since last Monday, creating a takeaway cafe service and implementing further methods to ensure safe engagement with our customers. We also want to thank those who have visited Cromford Mills for supporting our charity and retail tenants by buying locally and helping independent businesses, and for accepting the newly implemented social distancing behaviours we imposed and acting safely whilst you were here. We will miss you all during this closed period and will be keeping our website and social media up to date and finding new ways to engage with our audience. We will let everyone know when we will be welcoming you all back to this amazing place, hopefully it will be in the sunshine! Take care of each other and your communities and see you all soon.

Site Opening

The main Cromford Mills site, including the Visitor Centre, guided tours, Arkwright's Cafe, Wheatcroft's Wharf Cafe and all shops, will be closed to the public from 12pm on Monday 23rd March.

The site will be open to business tenants throughout.

The Surrounding Countryside

The surrounding countryside is an excellent place for locals to get outdoors, unwind and watch spring arrive. Just remember to keep your social distance of 2 metres away, but you can still wave hello to anyone you might see!  Our Beyond the Mill Walls Project has enhanced the area adjacent to the mill, church and river with wonderful wildlife sculptures and Cromford Canal is a great place to walk; please stay local if you are getting out and about in the fresh air and enjoy those places close to home.

We have postponed all events until 30th May.  We will keep the information updated on our events pages of our website.  We are contacting all event organisers affected and anyone who has bought tickets for any of our booked events individually regarding postponements and refunds.

If you have any questions or queries regarding an event booking please email

School Visits

These are being managed by our Education Team and are being postponed for the foreseeable future.  Our Education Officer will be in touch with all schools who are booked in for a visit.  If you have an enquiry about a school visit please email

Staffing Cromford Mills

Where possible members of the staff team will be working remotely.  There will be minimal staff on site essential to keep the business running.  If you wish to contact someone in the office, please contact them on their direct emails or use the main office contact or  telephone 01629 823256.

We will answer questions and respond to enquiries, but this may not be instant.  We will be keeping the website and social media updated to keep our visitors informed as to what is happening.

We will also be seeking ways to stay connected with our audiences during this time, including creating new online content, and looking after our site.

Supporting Cromford Mills

These decisions have been taken to safeguard everyone in the organisation whilst being aware of the need to protect the business for the long term. This will be a challenging time for our organisation, as we are an independent charity and heavily reliant on visitor income.

If you are coming for a walk to enjoy the surrounding countryside please pay for parking in the mill car parks, as every pound goes towards keeping the mills running.

If you would like to support us through this period you can purchase a gift voucher for the café / shop or event to use in the future by emailing  You can also purchase annual passes for the Visitor Centre and Guided Tours online which can be used when we are fully open again, just visit  If you would like to make a direct donation to the charity then visit our donate page.  All donations, however big or small, will help us to look after this amazing place, both now and in the future.

We would like to thank our visitors and members for all their ongoing support.

Further updates

The current unprecedented situation is continuously evolving and we will endeavour to give clear guidance and put the welfare of our people and visitors as our top priority.  We will be updating this page with any further changes to our operation.

Please stay safe and take care of yourselves, your families and your communities.
