THE ARKWRIGHT SOCIETY AND CROMFORD MILLS
In the 1970s volunteers came together to protect Cromford Mills, the world’s first successful water-powered cottonspinning mill built by Sir Richard Arkwright in an independent charity, the Arkwright Society has worked tirelessly to rescue the site from being demolished and restore it to the world heritage attraction you see today. There is along way to go to finish the full restoration and every pound ofyour membership helps us to continue this work.

We want Cromford Mills to be as dynamic, innovative and enterprising today as it was in the 18th Century, by creating sustainable new uses for the site that contribute positivelyto the local community, economy and environment. Your membership helps us to continue our education, events and volunteering programmes, inspiring people about ouramazing past and protecting it for future generations.
CARING FOR THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Membership subscriptions are not only vital in supporting the regeneration of Cromford Mills, but they also help us to take care of the surrounding natural environment.The Arkwright Society own and manage the beautiful Lumsdale Valley, a Scheduled Ancient Monument consisting of waterfalls and old mill ruins, as well as Slinter Woods and Dunsley Meadows, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and local nature reserve.
