Online talk: Water - the driving force behind Cromford

Online talk: Water - the driving force behind Cromford
Thursday, May 27, 2021

Discover the real power behind the Industrial Revolution – water.

Join David Romaine for this captivating online talk focused on the way in which Arkwright used the water from the Cromford Sough and the Bonsall Brook to drive the spinning machinery in his mills. David will also consider the problems faced by Arkwright in powering the mills and the way in which those problems seem to have been resolved.

David Romaine is one of the Arkwright Society's Volunteer Guides. Having worked in technical roles for the Ministry of Defence, Shell Research, Rolls Royce and Derby City Council, he likes to know how things work or worked. His main interests at Cromford Mills are the spinning machinery itself, the watercourses, and the waterwheels that were used to power the machines. David built the two model waterwheels which you might have spotted in the Mill Yard next to the Second Mill wheel pit.

David wishes to stress that the talk is based on his conjectural interpretation of the site and the way in which the water seems to have been used - others may see things differently.

This online talk will be run by the Arkwright Society.
