A History of the East Midlands Knitting Industry
We are pleased to offer this talk by Colin Moss as part of the Discovery Days Festival.
Discover the history of the knitting industry from earliest times up to the present day. This talk by Colin Moss shows how the East Midlands played a pivotal role in the industry and how today’s worldwide knitting industry has its foundations in technology developed in the East Midlands. The talk uses as examples historic buildings, some of the knitting machines on show at various museums together with some very modern machines in use in today’s knitting industry. Colin also describes the related social history of the “stockingers” who were the foundation of the knitting industry up until mid-Victorian times.

The Discovery Days Festival (Saturday 14th – Sunday 29th October) celebrates the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site with activities taking place all along the valley from Derby to Matlock Bath.
