Online talk: The Georgian Home: Consumption, Comfort and Display

September 30 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This talk will explore the idealisation and realities of the home in the eighteenth century in Britain. Considering the different experiences of domestic life it will explore how ideals of comfort, cleanliness and prudence were put into practice by those designing and living in houses. Drawing on examples from across the country, we will compare and contrast the experiences and expectations of the Georgians at home.

Dr Freya Gowrley is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in History at the University of Derby. Her monograph, Domestic Space in Britain, c.1750-1840: Materiality, Sociability & Emotion is forthcoming from Bloomsbury Academic.

Dr Ruth Larsen is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Derby. She has published widely on the history of the country house, gender history and material culture studies.

This online talk will be run by the Arkwright Society.
