ONLINE TALK: Lumsdale – 400 Years of Industry and Tourism

July 29, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

For 400 years the power of the Bentley Brook in the Lumsdale Valley at Matlock has attracted both industry and tourism. Christine and Alan Piper tell the story of the lead smelters, cotton spinners and bleachers who built mills to exploit the valley’s water power and the visitors who have come to see both its industries and its natural beauty.

Alan and Christine have lived in Lumsdale, where Christine was brought up, since 2014. Both are active members of the Lumsdale Steering Group of the Arkwright Society and volunteer Lumsdale tour guides. Their book, ‘Lumsdale – the Industrial Revolution in a Derbyshire Valley’ is available from the Cromford Mills shop. Before retiring to Derbyshire Alan was a solicitor. Christine taught in universities and is now an Emeritus Professor. They are members of the Derbyshire Singers and Alan plays with Darley Dale Band. They also help to run the Methodist Chapel & Community Centre at Matlock Moor.

This online talk will be run by the Arkwright Society.
