Highlighting Heritage – Aristocratic Tourism in Georgian England

A series of collaborative events between the Arkwright Society and Belper North Mill, looking to reveal interesting aspects of local heritage. Six evening talks, from March through to October, will alternate between venues in Cromford and Belper.

Topic – Aristocratic Tourism in Georgian England

Location: Education Room, Cromford Mills

Speaker: Dr Peter Collinge

Dr Peter Collinge provides an entertaining guide to the pleasures and pitfalls of visiting country houses in the Georgian era, including many in Derbyshire. Set within the wider context of eighteenth-century tourism and Elizabeth Bennet’s visit to Pemberley in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, access arrangements, encounters with owners and servants, and mistimed visits come to life through the expectations, experiences and opinionated reactions of those who sought entry to the grandest homes in the land.

Peter Collinge is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His researches  social and economic conditions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 2023, he published ‘Gloomy Inhospitality: limiting access to houses and country estates‘.
