Highlighting Heritage – Workers in the Mills

A series of collaborative events between the Arkwright Society and Belper North Mill, looking to reveal interesting aspects of local heritage. Six evening talks, from March through to October, will alternate between venues in Cromford and Belper.

Topic: Workers in the Mills

Speaker: Danielle Burton

Location: No 28, Market Place Belper

Danielle Burton has a history degree and masters in heritage. She is the author of Anthony Woodville : Sophisticate or Schemer, as well as conducting guided walks about the Georgian period in Derby and Belper. She currently works as an Archive Assistant at the Derbyshire Records Office (DRO) and has blogged extensively about issues about archival material on local Derbyshire history.

Danielle will tell us about the workers at the Mills established by the Arkwrights and the Strutts, drawing on material from the DRO from the early Arkwright advertisements for employees when the first Cromford Mill was built through to the Strutt’s extensive employment of locals in Belper,: issues of child and women workers and disciplinary action such as the levying of fines for ‘bad behaviour’. She will also discuss the 1834 Silk Mill strike in Derby.
