Highlighting Heritage – Mill Workers Housing

A series of collaborative events between the Arkwright Society and Belper North Mill, looking to reveal interesting aspects of local heritage. Six evening talks, from March through to October, will alternate between venues in Cromford and Belper.

Topic: Mill Workers Housing

Speaker: Jonathan Grattidge

Location: Education Room, Cromford Mills

Jonathan’s  talk is  about how the rapid growth in mills/factories near the Markeaton Brook led to a need for Working Class housing  in the West End/Nun’s Green area of Derby in the 1840s/1850s. The housing sadly was very inadequate and unhealthy, yet most of it survived into the 20th century. Jonathan will contrast this briefly with the housing built in Cromford  by the Arkwrights and in Belper by the Strutts. Jonathan is a retired Primary Head Teacher.  He Iives  in Derby and has  a longstanding love of family and social history. He first studied  the Health and Social Conditions of the Working Class in 19th Century Derby when he was doing his teaching degree  some time ago, but has remained fascinated by it!
