Following a degree in Zoology at Manchester University Nigel gained a postgraduate diploma in management studies at London University. Following this he joined Air Products and then Allied Breweries as a financial planning analyst. He then moved into the finance sector working in the strategic departments of Legal and General and Prudential. For the following sixteen years he held senior strategic and project management roles in both Bradford & Bingley Building Society and Britannia Building Society, before being appointed as the Southern Regional Manager at Britannia.
During retirement Nigel has been a trustee of the Derbyshire Dales Citizens Advice Bureau, Chair of the Derbyshire Dales CVS, and Chair of the Anthony Gell and Anthony Bunting Almshouses Charity in Wirksworth, whilst also volunteering as a guide at Kedleston Hall.
Nigel joined the Arkwright Society in November 2025 as a trustee and chair of the audit and risk committee.
Nigel lives with his wife, Pam, in Wirksworth.
